Golf is REALLY getting gimmicky. Why? Well, PGA Golf tournaments are losing their audiences…Why? Because the events are getting too Gimmicky!
Mike Purkey’s article, Five Golf Gimmicks That Need to Go Away, Right Now got me thinking about how things that were cool about golf a few minutes ago are not that cool now.
Let Them Yell
I totally agree with Mr. Purkey, the Stadium built on #16 at the Phoenix Open has gotten out of hand. And Speaking of the Phoenix Open…I’m not calling it the “WM”. Not going to happen. The event came about from the city of Phoenix and it should just be called “The Phoenix Friggin Open” if they need a gimmicky name.
Just Let Bill Play Golf
Yes, Bill Murray needs to give the antics a break. He needs to pass on his entertainment of the crowds at AT&T to someone like Snoop Dog or some of the other rappers they are pulling in to fill the Amature spots. Bill is far too good of a golfer to have to keep up all of his colorful skits.
No Talking Golf On TV
And, YES, my GOD, can the golf commentators they have on TV talk MORE frequently. I have gotten to where I just turn off the audio when I watch golf on TV. Of course, I record the events so I can fast forward through the trillions of commercials they play. And YES, it really is distracting when just about the time Jordan Speith takes the lead of the tournament they bring on one of the executives of the title sponsor to do their chin wag about being the sponsor of the event for 20 minutes. If they want to keep the air filled with noise Why don’t they just Mic-Up Jordan and pair him with Phil and we would have enough golf talk to fill five or six hours. At least what they talk about would be of more interest than knowing how far a Pro can hit his pitching wedge…which, by the way, is further than I can hit my driver.
Go Back to Old Gimmicks
And of course, while I am at it, why doesn’t golf bring back The Skins Game, The Dinna Shore Nabisco Championship, and the Bob Hope Classic. I mean, if the PGA wants to get gimmicky, why not go back to when the gimmicks were not gimmicks..they were the real part of golf.
Have a great year out there playing Business Golf. I’ll try to make it back here from time to time to enlighten you on whatever else pops into my mind. Until then, Let me know how I can help.
