To say Golf and the world of golf businesses have to change would be like telling a clock it needs to slow down. The Way I See It, both are going to do whatever they are deemed to do.
But both need to slow down and both need to get real with what their purpose really is.
Staying with the ‘golf and the clock’ analogy for a minute.
Golf has been around for a real long time. There have been civilizations that have gone, but Golf survived. And as far as the Clock…well…they have been around longer than golf but ever since there have been humans on earth, knowing what time it is has been something of consideration for humans to survive.
Now back to the Change golf needs to make. I’ve talked about golf needing to change several times over the year.
Golf Industry Has Got to Change to Survive a Recession 2009
What Should the Future of Golf Include? 2020
Where Will Tiger Lead Golf Now? 2019
Can Golf Find the WayBack Time Machine? 2019
What Is Going to Put Golf Back on Track? 2018
And the list goes on.
Now here we are, it is 2021. We have a global pandemic that is limited the amount of discretionary funds businesses and consumers have to spend. How will golf…one of the most expensive games to play and sport to support…be able to survive?
One question leads to another.
Guess your answer to the question is as good as my answer. Do golfers want golf to change? Those who are moving away from playing golf courses to going to Top Golf would probably say no, but their actions say yes.
What Top-Golfers are probably really saying is reflective from a comment one of them made to me..”If I am going to pay a lot to hit a golf ball I am going to do hit the golf ball from the third level of a driving range while knocking back expensive drinks.” That really is not golf but a form of entertainment.
There is a huge question needing to be answered and that is…Why does Golf have to be so expensive??? I’m sure a bright minded operations manager of a golf course could breakdown the costs of running a golf course that justifies their rates…and the CFO’s of one of the large golf manufacturers…as well as…one of the mega golf management corporations can spreadsheet their profit/loss reports to show how much of a beating they are getting from their expenses. However, that does not answer the question…WHY they can’t see the need to bring the cost of golf down?
The Process to Change
I’ve been around a long time talking about how golf is a great business tool and there are others before me who also have gone out and talked about the virtues golf has on developing business.
Now, it is not advisable to bring people together to demonstrate how exactly business golf works. Business golf too has to change.
So, it’s clear. Everything related to golf has to change in order for golf to change. That includes Business Golf.
I’ll work on that and get back to you.
Until then…let me know how I can help.
