Lots of questions about the Callaway acquisition of TopGolf.
Will TopGolf go away?
There are probably a few people who would like to see TopGolf go away..and maybe just as many who would like to see it hang around.
The question on TopGolf’s take on building hybrid driving ranges really helping Golf has been asked thousands of times and the answer from golfers is, NO. From non-Golfers is usually…What’s Golf?
When reviewing if TopGolf has helped golf the company line is they have…but finding actual proof it has is another thing.
Is Callaway buying TopGOlf to slowly close it down? Answer: Hmmmmm…stranger things have happened in the business world..and I’m sure getting this deal by the stockholders had some talk surrounding the deal having any real profitability. On paper, this deal might look good but is TopGolf’s style of golf a distraction to the mainstream golf industry?… which Callaway is clearly a leader of. Let’s keep an eye on this.
Will Callaway modernize their brand?
Callaway brand probably could use another overhaul, but is TopGOlf what it needs? The PR line from Callaway on what they are calling a ‘merge” is naturally going to be positive. When you dump billions of dollars of stockholder’s money into something not related to the direction the brand is going you better have a good story.
Does Callaway need the younger golfers? Answer: Absolutely. Does TopGolf draw in the Golfer that would be interested in Callaway’s brand? The better..and simpler question here is…are the people who go to TopGolf really care about Golf…period?
Will this acquisition help golf grow?
…or will it run more people away from playing golf?
It is still too early to say what will come out of this deal. On the surface it is strange, but there are plenty of large business deals that have been made over the years that are just as strange…or stranger.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Golf will benefit from this.
