I’m excited to see business golf functions popping up around the country and over in the UK. However, I’m still concerned with many of the newbies to golf still do not know how to play Business Golf.
1 Iron Tests Your Skill
During a recent round of regular golf, I found that the other members of my group felt most business golfers were usually better, more experienced, golfers.
One of the players in my group remarked…”Most of the rounds of business golf I have played over the years my guests all knew how to hit a 1 iron.”
That remark reflects upon an inside joke many old-timers to golf have. This reference to being able to hit a 1 Iron meant that their guest was a very skillful golfer.
BACKSTORY: The ‘1 iron’ joke goes back to what Lee Trevino is famous for saying…”If you are ever caught out on the golf course during a lightning storm just hold up a 1 iron because even God can’t hit a 1 iron”.
It’s Not the Iron It’s the Golfer
I have always said to those asking me to show them how to play business golf that is is not the skill level of golf that determines the success of the round of business golf. It is how you play the game of golf that matters.
Your guest may be hitting 400-yard drives and you only hit 250 yards. What matters is what happens after the drive and throughout the round of golf and not how every player plays each shot.
The game of golf is played by making a multitude of golf shots. How a business person handles each shot…and how they play the game of golf…tells a lot about the business person’s character.
The 1 Iron Walking Stick
Whether they can hit a 1 Iron or not would only come into play if they actually know how to hit a 1 Iron. For a fact..a 1 Iron is actually not an easy club to hit effectively. Mainly only the professional golfers have the skill set to hit a 1 Iron like it should be hit.
Here is the 1 Iron Shot Jack Nicklaus made in 1972…yes..they played golf back then.
Don’t expect to see too many business golfers with a 1 Iron in their bag. If they do…you could be playing with Jack Nicklaus…a real business golfer.
Let me know how I can help.
