Recently I was asked by one of my business acquaintances to play a round of business golf at the Las Colinas Country in Las Colinas, Texas.
I have played Las Colinas Country (LCC) many times. In, 2007 SyncLab Media produced my Mr. Business Golf Show and it was broadcasted Live there.
Where Business is Spoken
As is designed, after the round of golf, the group congregated on the Varanda. The veranda at LCC offers an Awesome view of the golf course highlighted by the skyline of Downtown Dallas.
Our discussion always starts out with a postmortem of our round of golf which usually starts with a statement on how difficult all 18 holes of the LCC golf course play to a bunch of hacks like ourselves.
Eventually, around the bottom of the first beverage, a question will be asked by the host of this gathering going something like…Gents, How is business?
The answer usually is given in short quips on how getting into discussing business was going to result in the person asking the question buying the next round of drinks.
However, in almost every gathering for business golf, someone in the group will respond to the call for discussion by asking a question to the group on how they would handle a workplace situation.
This rebuttal usually ranges from a human resource question on who to hire to do something, to a business development questions related to knowing anyone who needs a particular product or service.
Business Is Then Talked
It is this type of business talk that can ONLY be produced in this type of environment.
I have benefited from dozens of these type of discussions held after a round of golf.
Whereas, I would get nearly none of the same responses or engagement in the sharing of information during one of the hundreds of social business mixers I have attended over the years.
There is just something about spending a few hours with other business people who share a number of common interests and concluding the time with a business discussion that brings out the best in a person. It is better than standing in a Bar Lounge trying to have the same discussion with several people, several different times in a short period of time.
The day ended as it started….lots of excitement and heightened expectations on what today’s adventure will entail. Golf…the best business tool ever made.
Let me know how I can help.
