I have always been a firm advocate that giving golfers incentives in the form of a tax deduction for using golf as a business tool would boost the golf economy by at least $1 Billion a year. For the naysayers who will naturally say this incentive would be abused by the filthy rich I can come up with at least three measures that would keep that from happening. But, until those measures are needed..I’ll say that for another day.

Now that this year’s Golf Season is in full swing..pardon the pun…it is now time to get the Mr Business Golf Show ready to launch. But first it is time to get the go juice going on the Google Search engine.
Mr Business Golf Google+
As most of you know Mr Business Golf is exclusively on Google+. Why? Well it is where all the golfers are and where the message on what is going on in the golf world is read by more REAL people..plus all of the content I offer on G+ is immediately placed in the Google Search. What does this mean? Well that means that if someone is searching for content on Golf they will find what I post. Of course, the Mr Business Golf G+ page being Google verified helps…which..helps you if I am talking about you or your golf club.
Golf on ALLTOP
Then all my posts will be posted in the ALLTOP.com site. If you hvae not checked out ALLTOP then you need to. That is where everything worth seeing on the internet is posted in the catagory familar to your interest. So if you are interested in Golf all of the golf bloggers posts will be listed on ALLTOP. Check it..the ALLTOP Badge is in my side bar for you to easily find me over there.
Other than that, the Mr Business Golf Show is still in final production so please stay tuned. We will be on the air with a Live Google HangOut in just a bit.
It was a pleasure to talk to Ricky Potts, Les Bailey and Jason Baslow and show off the new SyncLab Media Studio.
There are some interesting conversations being held around the subject of Golf and the use of the latest technology to improve golf’s image to the people who live solely in the Tech World. The remark recently stated in a few of the publications makes one who uses tech thinking… is someone who is not using the latest golf tech gadgetry on the golf course Not forward thing??
In most cases this type of thinking is true, but there is a limit to what and where the latest technology may not be realistic for golfers.
Tech vs Golf
Google Glass..are as it is erroneously referred to in the golf circles as Google Glasses,… really is cutting edge technolgoy. Since entering the social spaces Google is hitting full stride with it’s near two year old Google+. Now Google is taking social to the next step of social media evolution which is combining offline world reality with the online world. They are doing this with the introduction of their Google Glass Project. Google Glass is an online interface lens that is placed in a pair of eyeglass frames. Yes, it would seem Google’s idea comes from Star Trekie Star Wars thinking. Except now Google has taken SciFi to Reality.
The rub with this tech being used by golfers begins with thinking it can be used while playing golf. Personally, as much as I love tech gadgets, I don’t think Google Glass is something many golfers will take as a serious device to improve their game while playing golf.
Let’s Get Real
The notion that you could call up an instructional video on how to hit a ball off an uphill lie would quickly become novel especially when the group of golfers behind you hit you with their golf shot after growing tired of you standing 150 yards off the tee watching a friggin video.
However, I could see getting yardage information and other reports on the environment as maybe being worthwhile obtaining thru a portable device. Maybe even keeping score or other data tracking would be in order for using a Google Glass device.
Unfortunately, anything else that has to do with playing golf while wearing Google Glass..or would be of influence during the actual golf swing …just is not going to work.
Real Uses for Google Glass
Now, using Google Glass at the driving range, in your backyard or in your office!!!! Get After It! I am allover using the Google Glass device to watch a video from Dave Bisbee, my golf instructor who is out in Sedona, AZ. , on a solution to keeping my club head from not lag behind my hands in my swing..all while standing on the practice tee..or in studio.
In could see Mark Neace, owner of Caddie Club Golf, having his caddies wearing them so they could provide accurate yardage to their players and to keep in contact with Caddie Central to receive changing conditions or announcement the Caddies need to tell their players.
There are a number of real live situations where the Google Glass could and should be used in assisting more people to playing golf.. As far as a device a golfer will use as something to keep them entertained while playing golf….I see the Google Glass then becomes a device that is distracting a golfer from playing golf and just would be the replacement of the Cellphone as something that takes away from the true experience of playing Golf.
I could even see the Google Glass device being something a golfer would quickly blame for losing a match or game, which eventually would lead to them blaming Golf as the cause of them not enjoying playing golf anymore.
Who is Forward Thinking?
Someone thinking of ways to add Tech Gadgets to Golf to improve Golf’s universal appeal to Techies really is not someone thinking forward. Someone truly forward thinking would be someone who understands what golf is about and has experienced what golf offers outside of it being a game or sport. Someone who is trying to find more ways of entertaining themselves while playing golf are really not forward thinking. They are someone attempting to add something into golf that does not fit into what golf is all about.
I say bring on technology. Tech is needed in golf to make golf easier to understand and if Google would like to send me a Google Glass I will use it…and yes, use it while I play just to see if wearing them on the course demonstrating forward thinking or just an attempt to look cool.

It is no surprised to see more and more Golf Instructors using the social spaces. What is exciting is to see them using Google+. That shows that some of them are finally Getting It and have come to realize that Social Search is where things happen for them.
However, it is disheartening to hear how many golf instructors neglect the the people in their online communities by not responding to them or not responding to them in a timely manor. In a recent conversation I had with one of the golf instructors I know here locally the remark…
“I had to take my G+ App off my phone and turn off my notified options on Google+ because I was getting too many emails from people asking me questions. I could not focus on my work which is teaching golf. I could really use the new business G+ was generating for me but I don’t have time to manage all those emails and teach at the same time.”
Gotta Manage the Community
So, what is the solution? For many golf instructors it boils down to them needing a Community Manager..someone to manager their social spaces. This would keep them out on the range doing what they do best..teaching golf. Some tips on being a better Community Manager
The issue is many golf instructors who do not understand how the business world has changed don’t see the value of having anyone manage their image online. Nor will they invest into what they need to invest in which is their business promotions…or into their business to put it simply.
Why Not? Most of the golf instructors I know carry their Smartphone’s and accept credit card payment on their phone..or..gasp..on their Tablets or iPads. Yes there are a few tech savvy golf professionals out there..especially the ones I have trained. So why not have a Community Manager on staff?
Invest Being Social
The truth be know, it really does not cost that much to hire or contract someone to monitor a golf instructor’s spaces. Especially if the results generate more business. A community manager who understands golf might be rare or hard to find, but over all, the CM’s who do understand golf and the social spaces really could produce more revenue for the golf instructor.
That is, if the golf instructor let’s them do their jobs. A few I have talked to want to cheap skate out on their needs by putting some sort of performance measurements on a CM. That is not going to work..never did and never will. A business owner would not put a performance measurement on their receptionist or secretary would they? The answer is No, in case you need to know.
No Change Will Lead To No Business
Golf instructors need to get with the change in the business world. It is now very clear the internet is the Yellow Pages and Newspaper Ads of yesterday. Social Media is rapidly changing to Social Search..where the consumer..or in this case the golfer..searches the social spaces to find who they can trust in business. Now that Google has entered the room to take what is being talked about on G+ and place it immediately into the Search Engines for the consumers to find quickly, there really is no other social space needed.
Community Mangers in the golf industry can make a difference not only for golf instructors but for private clubs, golf courses, resorts, golf retail stores and the list goes on. The challenge is..the Community Manager has to be a golfer. If they don’t know golf they will find themselves up against the wall when someone pings them on G+ telling them they are a Hooker and need it fixed. That could get a little embarrassing for a CM who has no idea what that person just told them..or if they took it the wrong way.
It is time to Get After It if you are a golf instructor…take a positive step and get someone to what what people are saying about you online. Let me know how I can help.
Why? There were two reasons why I decided it was time to get back to doing what I set out to do eight years ago.
The first reason has to do with recently being asked by a number of people and groups, Google being one, to offer my thoughts on Golf and the state the golf business.
The second reason deals with me also seeing a need to offer my experience to the golf industry in helping them understand how to use social media effectively.
Different Approach Needed
Golf is a different industry than others with a different set of problems which makes the approach Golf needs to take to effectively use the internet different.
It’s all about the change Golf needs to make to getting back to Golf being Social.
How I am going about doing this this time is a little different than before. This time I am using Google+ and the power of the HangOut to offer up answers to people’s questions and interview people in the golf world. These will be live video chats that anyone can watch. The recorded videos will be on YouTube under the Business Golf Playlist for Mr Business Golf Show.
It’s going to be fun..it’s going to be informative and it is going to be Social!!!
